Electoral College - The electoral college is one of the major parts of deciding on a president in elections in the United States. While most countries simply have a popular vote for their president or prime minister, the United States still uses an older method of deciding on the president elect. However, most people in the U.S. are not aware of how this process actually works.
What happens during the electoral college is that every state in the United States is assigned a certain number of electoral votes. These votes are what the candidates are actually trying to earn, rather than the largest percentage of the popular vote. It is for this reason that candidates often only campaign in certain states, instead of campaigning all over the country. The person who wins the most votes in each state will get the electoral votes and delegates for that state. These state delegates then cast their votes for the person who they think will be the best president.
In most cases, the electoral votes from a certain state that go for a certain candidate will end up being cast for that candidate in the end as well. However, there has been a case in history when the electoral delegate voted for somebody other than the person they were supposed to vote for. While this is highly rare and did not have an affect on the election, it is a possibility and is one reason why a lot of people are calling for the disbanding of the electoral college.
The electoral college was initially put into the methods for choosing a president by the Founding Fathers. The reason for this is that they did not trust the relatively uneducated citizens of their day to make such an important decision as who the president ought to be. By using the electoral system, they ensured that if the wrong decision was made in the popular vote, the electoral votes could be changed to give the country a better president.
In the world of today, the system seems to be a bit archaic, and a lot of people feel offended that their votes might not end up counting depending on what state they live in. For this reason, a lot of communities are pushing for an end to the electoral college.
