Classroom Rules - Classroom rules are an important part of making sure that the classroom is an organized place that is highly conducive to learning. There are a few things that you should consider doing in order to make sure that your classroom runs smoothly. First of all, you should make sure that all of your students are very clear on what the rules are from the beginning – and make sure you’re firm with them. If you get a reputation for allowing students to break the rules, then they’ll eventually start breaking the rules all the time without worrying about punishment. This makes it exceptionally hard to keep classroom order.
You should make sure that your classroom rules are also fair. Most children will accept rules if they’re at least somewhat logical and fair. That being said, however, you should also make sure that students know that your rules are always made in order to make sure that they remain safe - and some of them are not optional. The ones that aren’t optional are obviously any rules that are necessary since they are rules for the entire school as a whole.
One thing that you can try is allowing your students to help you make up some of the classroom rules. This is beneficial for a few reasons. First of all, children are more likely to follow rules that they and their classmates have thought up on their own. Second, it gives you an activity that will help the children get to know one another. Finally, it gives children a greater sense of social responsibility. Not only are there rules that they have to follow, but now they understand why some of those rules are in place, and know why they were made.
A lot of teachers find that some of the best classroom rules regard distractions in the class. In fact, it’s recommended that you make rules that reduce the number of distractions by as much as possible. This includes requiring that students leave toys at home (unless you have a show and tell portion during your day). You should also require that students not eat or drink during class (with the exception of water) since this makes it less likely that there will be spills during class or that there will be fights over who gets to eat what.
Once you have a comprehensive set of rules for your class, you’ll find that everything runs a lot more smoothly.
