Classroom Themes - Classroom themes are a great way to get students into a particular unit that you might be studying. Not only that, but when you’re setting up the theme, there are a lot of different art projects that your students will be able to do. Finally, having themes makes it a lot easier to teach children about subjects that the might ordinarily hate (like math, for instance) by making it both more interesting and more fun to learn math skills.
While you should always make sure that the classroom themes you’re thinking of using are acceptable in a school setting, what you use is generally up to you. You can use seasonal themes, or you can switch themes more often. Lots of classrooms use holiday themes for each month, for instance – Halloween for October, Thanksgiving for November and Valentine’s Day for February.
Another great idea for a themed classroom is based on learning about a particular thing. For instance, you could pick a theme like fish, and then have all of your assignments based on fish-related themes. Goldfish crackers would be great for treats, and your math assignments could involve counting fish.
Classroom themes based on ancient societies are also fun, and they probably include the largest set of fun and interesting activities for children. After all, if you pick a society like the Greeks or Romans, there are plenty of mythological stories that children can read for reading assignments – and you can discuss different numbering systems as well as how hard it would have been to add and subtract in them for a math subject.
For classrooms of older students, you can even let the children decide on a theme. However, if you decide to give the children a choice, it’s highly recommended that you provide a list of potential themes for them to choose from – otherwise you never know what themes they’ll think of. Generally, if you let students choose a theme, they’ll be much more happy with it than they would be if you just imposed it on them. After all, they made the choice!
Themed classroom settings are a great way to make learning more fun for students of all ages.
