Brown Vs Board Of Education - For those of you unfamiliar with the quest for racial equality in the United States of America, Brown vs. Board of Education was a decisive case handed down by the Supreme Court of that country.
In Brown vs Board of Education, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the doctrine of separate but equal in public accommodations, particular in public schools, was unconstitutional.
Brown vs Board of Education arose out of Topeka, Kansas, and Monroe Elementary School. A young Black girl was relegated to attending an all Black school while white students attended school elsewhere. The United States Supreme Court ruled that such a division of schools resulted in an inherent inequity and was, thus, unconstitutional.
The 50th anniversary of the decision of the United States Supreme Court in Brown vs Board of Education was marked in the summer of 2004. Celebrations commemorating the event were held around the United States, particularly in Topeka, Kansas, where the case originally arose. U.S. President George W. Bush was among the luminaries who attended events in Kansas to mark the anniversary of Brown vs Board of Education.
The Monroe Elementary School has become a national landmark. The plaintiff in the Brown vs Board of Education case is now a woman in her sixties. (Her younger sister ran for Congress from Kansas in the 1990s.)
The quest for equality did not end with the Brown vs Board of Education case. Indeed, there have been numerous other cases before the United States Supreme Court since the Brown vs Board of Education dealing with matters of racial equality and related issues. Indeed, during every term of the United States Supreme Court, that judicial body deals with one case of another addressing issues of equal rights and the like.
But, in the end, the Brown vs Board of Education was an important case in bringing the United States forward. Because of Brown vs Board of Education, important steps were taken to ensure that all people are treated equally regardless of their race.
