Mount Carmel in Garapan (Saipan) during the German Periodby Dirk H.R. Spennemann 43 pp., ill.; ISBN: 978 1 921220 06 7 The spiritual center of Catholic Saipan was Nuestra Senora del Carmen (Mother of God of Mount
Carmel) at Garapan, erected in 1892 as successor to the church San Isidoro (1854). Mount Carmel saw a number of modifications until its destruction during the US assault on Saipan in 1944. This booklet compiles the known photographs of the church and discusses its history. It is the first study of its kind in the Mariana Islands.
Luta : I Tiempun Aleman. Rota as seen through German Eyes 1899-1914by Dirk H.R. Spennemann iv, 135 pp., ill.; ISBN: 978 1 921220 05 0 Imperial Germany bought the Mariana Islands from
Spain in 1899 and quickly moved to establish an
efficient administration, led by the enlightened
Georg Fritz as district administrator. The German
administration was centered on Saipan, which was
connected to the outside world through a number
of shipping lines. Rota, where about 20% of the
population resided, was reliant on irregular visits
by trading vessels. Off the beaten track for all but
the most determined visitor, Rota received little
attention in the literature published during the German
period (1899-1914). | |

Echoes from the Past: Tracing the German Experience through selected Objects from the Jindera Pioneer Museum by Dirk HR Spennemann
32 pp., ill.; ISBN: 978 1 921220 09 8 A large number of residents in the Southern Riverina trace their ancestry to German settlers. Attracted to the fertile lands of the Riverina, they travelled from South Australia on arduous wagon treks. From 1867 onwards they formed communities clustered around communally-built Protestant Churches in Gerogery, Jindera, Walla Walla, Edgehill, Burrumbuttock, Pleasant Hills and Walbundrie. Frugal and hardworking, driven by the proverbial Protestant work ethic, the German farmers were generally well respected at the time. Their strong Protestant Lutheran faith governed both pubic and private lives. Through a series of objects from the Jindera Pioneer Museum, this catalogue illustrates the experience of the German community during the nineteenth and early twentieth century.

'Gedruckt in Samoa'. A bibliographic Analysis of Commercial Printing in German Samoa (1901-1914) by Dirk H.R. Spennemann xii, 174 pp. pp., ill.; ISBN: 978 1 921220 05 0 Germany was a relative late-comer on the colonial scene. While the impact and legacy of the German colonial experience in Africa, China and the South Pacific has been examined by historians, few studies exist which try to assess the nature of newspaper publishing in the German colonies. What exists are very general overviews or a well repeated discussion of a specific event, namely as the conflict between the press and the colonial administration in German East Africa. The Pacific has been ignored in this regard.

Melimel. The Good Friday Typhoon of 1907 and its aftermath in the Mortlocks, Caroline Islands by Dirk H.R. Edge of Empire. The German Colonial Period in the Mariana Islands 1899-1914 by Dirk H.R. Spennemann vii, 394 pp., ill.; ISBN: 978 1 921220 04 3 Imperial Germany's colonial experience in Micronesia was only brief, but left a lasting impact on the communities it ruled. During a fifteen year period, between the Spanish American War of 1898 and the early days of World War I in October 1914, a handful of German colonial administrators initiated educational, economic and social policies that were to have a significant impact on the Northern Mariana Islands. Compulsory schooling with instruction in Chamorro and Carolinian, private land ownership limited to Chamorro and Carolinians (excluding even Germans!), homesteading programs and environmental protection are only some of the German initiatives that were both innovative and unique though the colonial Pacific.

The Border Post (Albury, NSW) Fiction Index 1856-1885.by Dirk HR Spennemann
iv, 96 pp., ill.; ISBN: 978 1 921220 001 2 Founded in 1856, the Border Post was Albury's first newspaper. The range of verse, from bush ballads to literary poetry, was a common art form in the mid nineteenth century. Prose fiction was expensive in terms of printing space and thus limited. This is well reflected in the pages of the Border Post, which focussed on verse over prose in its offerings. |
