I stayed at the Heritage Hotel in central Kuala Lumpur.
This was the old central railway station. It's still used as a railway station, but the offices have been converted into a hotel.
It is a heritage listed building, about 100 years old but clean and comfortable. I was on the top floor, and never saw any other guests on that floor during the time I was there. Aircon was excellent, but the room lacked a frig and tea/coffee-making facilities, which was a major drawback. TV was useless. The room was spacious with ensuite and a pleasant view from a tiny window.
The elevator is reputed to be the oldest in Malaysia.
The price was $A40 a night including a nice cooked breakfast---2 sausages, 2 eggs, 2 toast, orange juice, and coffee.
There's a small local restaurant downstairs (but not part of the hotel) where local railway workers and taxi drivers were eating. It's open 24 hours. Basic chinese help-yourself buffet. It looked clean, so I decided to have dinner there the first night. I asked the price, and the Indian guy said "Are you guest at hotel?"
"Yes"
"Don't worry about price, we'll look after you good"
"Uh-uh" to myself, "Don's going to be taken for a ride here"
Anyway, I said OK, and pointed to whatever I wanted---curry beef, roast chicken, curry rice, curry sauce, pasta, spinach----quite a large plateful, with iced orange juice and coffee. It was an excellent meal.
The bill?-----$3.20.
I ate there most nights, and the price was never over $3.60 no matter how much I ate or drank.
