The Submarine Future - The submarine future, what does the future hold for the submarine in the Navy of the new millennium? Mainly the design ideas are mainly improving the submarine designs already in service. While some new designs have been proposed, nothing new has been started. The last major submarine design was that of the Seawolf class of attack sub. Since the design was made during the Cold War, with the fall of the Soviet Union, the Seawolf class has been relegated to the shelves of the Navel archives.
While it looks like that there is little designing being done for the submarine fleet, there have been new submarines classes. The newest one, because it will not see service till 2006, is the Virginia class. This new class no longer focuses on nuclear or underwater warfare exclusively. This class instead has a multi-mission design in mind. This design will give Special Forces a new platform from which to launch attacks on hard to reach targets with a greater chance of mission success than with airborne or seaborne drops.
For a time the question of what would a submarine fleet be used for has plagued the minds of military planners. With the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union now gone, what use is the submarine fleet? The uses are there, they can be used for covert espionage on enemy territories. Another use is that of a platform for Special Forces to launch assaults on enemy targets. And the use of the submarine fleet as a nuclear deterrent to other nuclear equipped nations.
Just because the Soviets are gone does not mean we would scrap a nuclear missile submarine, we would continue to use the vessel as a warning to rouge nations, if you try to attack with a nuclear missile, we will launch a dozen missiles at you in seconds, not minutes. It would deter a nation from a nuclear attack when they realize we could launch dozens of nuclear missiles from a few miles of their coast. Submarines are here to stay, though their roles in the Navy may change.
