Student Loans - Student loans can help you to pay a portion of your educational expenses and are often available at a very low interest rate in most areas of the U.S. and Great Britain. More people are eligible for student loans then you may think, with over 70% of students today receiving financial aid through student loans and other programs set up to help cover the rising cost of educational expenses. While student loans are the most popular method of paying for educational expenses, there are many other grants and scholarships available which you should also check into when starting college.
Interest free student loans are also available by some institutions and one of the most popular student loans program is the Stafford Loan. The Stafford Loan is insured by a state or national guarantee agency and reinsured by the federal government. There are two types of Stafford Loans available; Subsidized student loans and non-subsidized student loans.
If you demonstrate financial need (according to calculations done by your school and the government, using the FAFSA and other forms), the government will pay your interest on part or all of the Stafford loans you take out while you attend school. These are called "subsidized Student Loans". Subsidized student loans can save you many thousands of dollars over non-subsidized student loans, if you qualify. If you are not sure whether or not you qualify for subsidized student loans, you should seek the advice a loan counsellor or a school counsellor or admissions officer. They will be more then happy to go over you current financial situation in order to help you determine whether or not you qualify for the subsidized student loans program.
Regardless of your families income, you can apply for unsubsidized student loans if your subsidized Stafford loan amount is less than the annual Stafford borrowing limit. However, you will be charged interest on any unsubsidized portion while you’re still in school. You can either defer that interest until you’re out of school (at which time the accrued interest will be added to the balance outstanding), or you can choose to pay the interest while in school.
