Butternut Stock Wood Carving - Botanically speaking, the butternut found in butternut stock wood carving goes by the Latin name of Juglans cinerea. Juglans means the jut of Jupiter, while cinerea describes the well known gray bark of the tree. The way carvers speak about butternut stock wood carving, the wood produces some Olympian results.
Butternut is also known as oilnut, lemon walnut, and white walnut, with the reference to walnut being non accidental. The butternut is so closely related to black walnut that the grain patterns or figures are identical. With butternut stock wood carving, you can expect a close resemblance to that of walnut wood carving.
As a wood source, butternut stock wood carving does have its supporters. It has been used in the fine woodworking by cabinetmakers for more than a century. The wood is so popular and used because it’s very stable with little warping or cracking. If planning and cutting tools aren’t extra sharp however; tearing of the grain may occur.
Carvers in the United States and Canada have favored butternut stock wood carving. A lot of church altars were carved in butternut. Using hand tools or power tools, carvers have found that the wood will work quite easily. The highlight of the wood is the beautiful grain, especially more so when it is oiled.
The heartwood color of the butternut stock wood carving has been described as chestnut brown, dark brown, and even a butter tan. What’s most appealing about it is the satin like luster that is achieved when a knife or gouge cut leaves a smooth surface. When a clear finished is applied to the carving, that luster is even more pronounced.
Depending on the dimensions of the butternut stock wood carving and which part of the world you live in, the prices for butternut will range in price from 2.00$ a board foot to 5.00$ a board foot.
In many ways, butternut stock wood carving is a preferred favorite with carvers all around the world. A lot of carvers prefer this wood, simply because it has characteristics that other woods can’t begin to match up to.
