Disabled Alternative Road Travel Service
For someone with a physical disability, travelling, even
just to the shops is only possible with special transport
and the support of helpers. Simple journeys that able-bodied
people take for granted are major events for those using wheelchairs.
DARTS has 3 Toyota Coaster buses. Our oldest bus is nearly
10 years old. We hope to be able to replace it at the end
of 2005. Each bus lasts 10 years and travels 200,000 km. The
cost of each bus is $90,0000 plus a further $25,000 to modify
it and add a hydraulic hoist. Although DARTS receives HACC
funding via the Ministry of Transport, this funding is only
sufficient to meet staff wages which is about 70% of our budget. Several
local Councils and Clubs give grants towards running costs
BUT we have to raise funds for bus replacement ourselves.
