"My Australian Favourites"

How McDougal Topped the Score
Thomas E. Spencer
This is probably my all time favourite. I first heard this poem in 3rd grade at Burke Ward Primary School in Broken Hill. The teacher was a guy named Jock McKee, and he was great. I quickly learned to share his passion for Australian Poetry, and will be forever indebted to him. If you happen to come across Jock in your wanderings, tell him I said g'day.
A Bush Christening
Banjo Paterson
It was difficult to decide, I love so many, but I think this is my favourite from the Banjo.
My Country
Dorothea Makellar
I love a sunburnt country and I also love this poem about my home.
The Teams
Henry Lawson
Another difficult decision, but this poem paints such a vivid picture of life in the early days that it takes the award for my favourite from Henry Lawson.
Said Hanrahan
P.J. Hartigan
("John O’Brien")
A truly cynical yarn about life in the early days. However it might well be just as valid today. A great yarn to round off this initial showcase of Australian Poetry.
