JONATHAN LITTLE
Posted: 20 January, 2008. For
the second year in succession, Jonathan Little’s compositions have been
honoured with an ASCAPlus award for concert music.
This year’s award was announced in New York by Marilyn Bergman, President of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. ASCAPlus awards are granted by an independent panel and “based upon the unique prestige value” of a writer’s catalogue of original compositions. The panel included two leading orchestral and band directors, and Judith Clurman, Director of Choral Studies at the Juilliard School. Jonathan Little, who was born in Melbourne, lectures in Music at the University of Chichester, holds a PhD in orchestration, and is also a specialist in commercial music and music business. Prior to joining the University he was Principal of the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford, UK. In October 2007, the first compilation album of his music was released on Dilute Recordings (UK) to critical praise and airplay throughout the U.S. and Australia. Cambridge University Press’s Tempo magazine (Jan. 2008) described it as a “ground-breaking tour de force … incandescent”. Previously, in the period 2004-07, the US-headquartered French record label ERM (Editions de la Rue Margot) undertook to record a selection of his compositions within their multi-CD “Masterworks” series, performed by the Czech and Kiev Philharmonic Orchestras. Recordings have been supported by the Kenneth Leighton Trust (UK) and the Foundation for New Music (USA). Australia’s leading independent fine music publisher, Wirripang, is currently engaged upon issuing his catalogue of vocal and instrumental works. His major new album, Terpsichore and Other Works, is also available in Australia direct from Wirripang. DAVID KEEFFE 2006 Melbourne International Festival of Brass FAC member David Keeffe has won the inaugural McComish Composition Competition (Slow March) at the 2006 Melbourne International Festival of Brass with his work "The Eleventh Day". It was premiered in St Paul's Cathedral in Melbourne by the Brisbane Excelsior Band on Friday 29 September. David also had his quick march "Emerald Hill" selected as one of the 5 finalists. <><><><><><><><><><><><> KEVIN
