Breeding Chocolate Labrador Retrievers

Coat Colour Inheritance - Genetics

Is this hard to understand? Look here to see the explanation of genetics and passing on coat colour traits.

As you can see from the Chocolate dog genetics page, there are only two combinations of genes that will result in a Chocolate dog.

This makes Chocolate the rarest of the labrador colours, although they could be as common as yellow (only three combinations) if they were specifically bred for. In contrast there are four combinations of genes to get a black dog.
