On the 6.3.1919 he was admitted to a Hospital in England suffering from an old injury to the cornea of his left eye, where he developed influenza. He was one of the few lucky ones to recover from this terrible strain of influenza which killed millions of people throughout the world.

He was granted special leave from 5th.April to the 5th.October 1919 with pay only, to attend The Steel Coy of Scotland of 23, Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow for Steel Smelting instruction. During this time he stayed with his step Mother Mrs Mary (McMillan) Whiteford at 5A,Marquis St. Glasgow.

He received The British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
He worked for The West Australian Newspaper in St. Georges Tce. Perth as a machinist.

On the 22.10.1921 he married VERA MARTHA BURNETT and purchased a new home at 17,Pennant St. North Perth, where they lived happily, their first son, ARNOLD being born on the 11.10.1922 at North Perth. Unfortunately, Charles had kidney problems & was operated on at St. John of God Hospital, Subiaco during June 1925 and passed away on the 21st.June 1925 from infections Then on the 5.9.1925 another son, CHARLES was born.

Mrs VERA MARTHA WHITEFORD continued to live at Pennant St. and her father HARRY BURNETT moved in to keep her company and no doubt assist with the house payments, her only income being a War Pension. Unfortunately, on the 2.11.1926 at the age of only 55 years Harry Burnett passed away suddenly of a heart attack whilst sitting in the kitchen.
All this was too much for our mother and after letting her home, we all moved to Armadale W.A. where we stayed with her Uncle & Aunt, Charles & Mary Walton.
