*** THE BURNETT STORY ***

From Devon, England , during the year of 1877 a THOMAS BURNETT, his second wife MARTHA. H. (nee Walker) called ANNIE and two young sons CHARLES & HARRY, set out in the Sailing Ship "Rodney" for Adelaide, arriving on the 7.9.1877. During the voyage young Harry and another playmate were washed overboard but, fortunately for all, they were washed back on board by the following wave, being caught by their opposite fathers.

Young CHARLES BURNETT died at an early age and in due course THOMAS and MARTHA HARRIET ( ANNIE) journied to Perth where he obtained work with the Lands and Surveys Dept., lived at 32,Irwin St. Perth where he died on the 10.7.1905. His wife ANNIE was a strong supporter of the National Party ( Forerunner to the Present Liberal Party) Church functions and many Charity organisations. She passed away on the 31.10.1931 in Perth where she had lived at 34, Hill St. Perth. The then Premier James Mitchell (later Sir James) together with other parliamentarians were all pall bearers at her funeral.

HARRY BURNETT met and in time married ELLEN EMMA WALTON in the Methodist Manse in Morphett St. Adelaide on the 1st.June 1893. Emma Ellen put her age up to 21 years as, at her true age of 19 she would have had to obtain her fathers permission to marry and as he was missing, that wasn't forthcoming.

After the birth of their first child THOMAS ARNOLD in 1894, they moved to Broken Hill in search of work for Harry as a painter. A rich lode of silver, lead & zinc had been discovered by a boundary rider from the Mt. Gipps Station, a Charles Rasp in 1883 and the mine was called The Broken Hill. By 1885 mining had commenced in earnest & the town developed at break-neck speed. By 1888 a railway opened between Peterborough S.A. and Broken Hill , thus connecting to Adelaide via The Burra.

They had two daughters whilst living there under very poor conditions in an area called Silvertown. A corregated iron dwelling lined with hessian, with no facilities was their lot. Their daughters were, LILLY JANE born in 1898 and my Mother to be, VERA MARTHA in 1901.
With three young children, the heat, dust & flies was just too much for their mother and worried about the health of their family, they moved to Adelaide where father took off for Perth to find work and a home for his growing family.

In 1903 the rest of the Burnett family sailed for Fremantle. They lived in Hay St. Perth right next to His Majesty's Theatre, which was being built at that time. Mrs. Burnett asked one of the brickies if she could have a little mortar to repair her kitchen stove surrounds. Luckily for her, he came and did the repairs himself. Harry Burnett in the meanwhile obtained work as a Government painter. Later, they moved to Woodlupine, now called Queens Park. In due course they had a further three children, making six in all.
