THE HANDBOOK OF THE BELGIAN 
BANTAM CLUB OF AUSTRALIA


The Club published a comprehensive Handbook of the breed in March 2000 and has now (December 2007) done a complete revision, including a lot of new colour photos, so it now has at total of 95. It also has a new cover (maroon instead of green) but is the same price as the old one.

It has a total of 182 pages and is a B5 (258 x l84mm) (10" x 7.25") 
sized book. Sixteen of these pages contain full colour photographs 
of our Australian birds, plus some from overseas. The text section 
has over 100 B&W photos, diagrams and illustrations. 

The Handbook contains of a full history of the birds, both overseas 
and here in Australia, a short history of the Belgian Bantam Club 
of Australia and the full Australian Standard and Colour Standard. 

There are also comprehensive chapters dealing with housing & management, hatching & rearing chickens, breeding & genetics, 
feeding & nutrition, exhibiting & judging, common diseases and
much, much more.  Everything you need to know about the birds
can be found within this Handbook. 

Copies of the Handbook are available from the Club Secretary for $A49-50

CLUB ITEMS AVAILABLE

 

Club badges - $A9-00, including postage.
They are 1 inch badges have gold edging and the 
insert shown on the spoon and key rings below.

Club spoons - $A10-00, including postage.

      

New Club badges.  These are 1 inch and 2 inch badges featuring our three head logo in colour on a white background.  The 1 inch are $A9-00 and the 2 inch are $A12-00 (both include postage).

Club screen printed cotton sew-on patches
These are 15cm x 15cm yellow cotton squares with the Club "three head" logo in red and 
"Belgian Bantam Club of Australia" printed in black.  They can be cut to size (square or 
round) and then sewn onto anything you like. $A3-00 each, including postage.

Club embroidered patches are now available again. Unfortunately the cost has increased considerably and they will now have to sell at $A13-00, including postage.  The picture below
does not really do them justice.  It just wouldn't scan properly for some reason.

Club key rings There are gold, silver or bronze in metal and oblong or rounded in timber.  
Each has the Club logo (same as the Club badge and spoons) on it and they are $A13-00 
each, including postage.  These shown here are much smaller than the actual size.

          

There are a limited number of British Belgian Bantam Club badges available for $12-00 each, including posting.  They are oval die stamped iron 1 inch wide with gold plating and stud fastening and feature a colour d'Anvers and d'Uccle cock on white enamel. 

Fridge magnets - business card size with colour photos of various birds on them are $A3-00 each or 2 for $A5-00.  Please add postage of $A1-00 for up to four.

New badges and key rings - 57mm (2 inch).  Some feature the Club logo, other have pictures of various birds.  There are even some with other breeds on them, including waterfowl.  These examples are shown smaller than the actual size.  The badges have a pin on the back and are $A2-50 each.  The key rings are $A3-00 and can also be used as a necklace by adding a longer chain.  Postage (for up to four of either) is $A1-00. 

          

              

Small key rings - pictured above, smaller than actual size.  These are your standard small plastic key rings and feature a range of birds in both colour and B&W.  Some have birds on both sides, others have "The Belgian Bantam Club of Australia" written on the reverse side.  They come in black, blue, red, yellow, green and purple.  Perfect for a range of uses quite apart from key rings.   Attach them to your cages, carry boxes, school bags, purses -  anything that needs identifying.  They are just 50 cents each, plus $A2-00 postage (for up to eight). 

Club T-shirts - $15-00, including postage.  These are quite stylish knitted T-shirts with a collar.  
They are lemon yellow with the Club name (in black) and our  "three heads" logo (in red).

Club caps -They are your standard adjustable cap and (at the moment) come in plain red with black embroidery or black with a contrast trim.  All have "The Belgian Bantam Club of Australia" embroidered on the front above the brim.  They are $A20-00 each, including postage. If you want a  particular colour just ask as it can be ordered specially for you. 

Khris Abuid put together a CD (or you can have a DVD) which contains a massive amount of general information on poultry, including genetics, items from the Internet on a variety of subjects and a wealth of historical material.  This CD will be sent to any Club member interested and costs $8-00 to copy and post.

There is a DVD (or you can have a CD) containing photos from the Club's 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 Annual Shows now available.  There are also photos from several of the Sydney Royals, a lot from the Greenbank Feature Shows (Queensland) and quite a few other bits and pieces.  It costs $10-00 including postage. 

Copies of the full Club Membership Listing are also available (but only to financial Club members) at any time, free of charge, just ask the Club Secretary to post you one. A new one 
will be included with the November Newsletter each year, but changes are often made to existing details and many new people join during the year.  Any new members joining during the year will also receive a copy.

Club show sashes are also available, but generally only one per Club per year (unless it is a "Royal" Show - they may have more). However exceptions are made if a large number of birds are likely to exhibited, or if it is a "Belgian Feature Show".  Small banners, medallions, rosettes are also available as are our "Special Award" cards and information sheets to display.  If you would like your Club to award a sash at its Annual Show please send the request to Irene Hannan, the Belgian Bantam Club Secretary.

on a home computer and most are presented in display folder format.  This also allows them to be added to as more information becomes available on each subject.

"The Belgian Bantam Club of Australia - Information Kit" contains information and a 
short history of the birds.   There are also some B&W drawings and photos and information about the Belgian Bantam Club, a list of Club merchandise and publications available and a membership application form.  This information is sent free of charge to anyone requesting it. If you know someone who already has Belgians, or may be interested in purchasing some, or wishes to join 
the Belgian Bantam Club, then this is essential reading.

Copies of the Australian Belgian Standard and Australian Colour Standard are also available for $A3-00 (each set, including postage). These are in a handy booklet form for ease 
of use. They will also be sent free of charge to any judge who may be judging Belgian bantams 
at any show anywhere, all you need to do is send Irene a name and address.  (Please note that this is also included in the Club Handbook and several of the other publications mentioned below).
These were completely updated in Sept 2006 and there have been some major changes

A complete "History of the Belgian Bantam Club 1983-2003".  This is an A4 booklet with 118 pages.  It contains an enormous amount of information that just couldn't be included in the Club Handbook due to lack of space. It has all the Annual Show class results, Annual General Meeting Minutes, lists of Annual Show judges, a full history of the birds in Australia, various extracts and interesting articles from past Club Newsletters and many B&W photos.  
It is available for $A15-00, including postage.

"The Minutes of the Annual General Meetings of the Belgian Bantam Club of Australia" This is added to each year and is currently a 52 page A4 booklet which has been made available to anyone wishing to purchase a copy.  It is $A8-00, including postage.

There is also an "Information Kit for Judges (and Breeders) of Belgian Bantams", a 60 page A4 booklet designed to be a complete instruction kit for judging Belgian bantams. It contains a full Standard, list of faults, judging sheets, B&W diagrams, step-by-step guide to judging the birds and several very informative articles. There are also extra copies of the points sheets used 
for judging the birds included.  This is essential reading for the serious breeder as an aid to selecting which birds to show and a must for both the novice and experienced judge. The cost is $A13-00, including postage.

"The Barbu de Watermael" is a comprehensive 80 page A4 booklet dealing with all aspects of the de Watermael, including their full history (overseas and here in Australia), their type and characteristics, the Standard from overseas plus our Australian Standard and Colour Standard, housing and management, breeding and exhibiting.  The full contents of the 1985 S.B.H.D. booklet "Watermallse Baardjes" has been translated into English and included.  There are other foreign language articles from Europe which have also been translated into English. It has almost 100 B&W photos and drawings plus there are now twelve pages of full colour photos (67 in total)
from both Australia and overseas.  The cost is $A20-00 including postage.

"A Series of Articles Dealing with Breeding and Genetics" is a comprehensive 87 page 
A4 booklet with information on particular colours and the breeding of Belgian bantams, plus 
quite a few more pertinent general poultry articles on breeding and genetics.  Section One contains articles specifically relating to Belgian bantams.  Section Two has general articles on breeding and genetics.  Section Three has some extra bits and pieces relating to eggs and ch
ickens.  Section Four contains extracts from the Club Handbook.  The cost is $A13-00, including postage.  

"A Series of Articles Dealing with Diseases and Disease Diagnosis" This is an 82 page 
A4 booklet
and
has been put together as a series of articles written by various people over a period of several years.  Some of these articles give specific details of particular diseases, others deal with the broader view and are much more general, though still quite relevant. It has aids to diagnosing a particular disease as there are articles on diagnosis by symptoms, causative agents, management problems, etc. 
There are many good general disease books available so this booklet does not attempt to cover everything, but rather aid the breeder with the most common diseases affecting Belgian bantams. The cost is $A13-00, including postage.

“Preparing Your Poultry For Exhibition” is a 68 page A4 booklet containing some of the content from Chapter 10 of the Handbook, drawings of good and bad points of birds from the Judge’s Kit and a full copy of the Australian Standard and Colour Standard.  The rest is a series 
of articles, mostly from Australian authors, but including a couple from the USA.  There are also well over 60 B&W photos and drawings.  Everything you need to know to exhibit your birds.
It costs $A13-00, including postage.

"Housing your Poultry" is a 56 page A4 booklet featuring articles on housing from both Australia and around the world.  It starts with brooding chickens and just keeps going from there. There are around100 B&W photos and diagrams of various pens, coops, runs, etc, including indoor pens, show preparation cages and carry boxes.  You will find examples of just about every type of poultry housing from palaces to hovels.  Definitely something for everyone and to suit every budget.  It costs $A13-00 including postage.

"The Belgian Bantam Club of Australia Colouring Book" is a 50 page A4 booklet containing B&W drawings, diagrams and cartoons ready for colouring.  Most of these are of various Belgian bantams many of which were drawn by Paul Williams.  The rest are made up of a variety of "chooks" from here there and everywhere.  As it is aimed more at our juniors the cost is only $A6-00, including postage.
