Taurus: 20 April to 20 May

Element:  First Earth sign- first Decan (10 degrees) of the Earth Triplicity.

Quality: Fixed (Stubborn, Persistent, Practical)

Polarity: Feminine/negative/yin (i.e. non initiating, passive, receptive).

Symbology: The symbol for Taurus is the White Bull, traditionally the symbol of fertility. The Sun's entry into Taurus in ancient times was celebrated at the feast of Maya, the equivalent of today's Mayday. A white bull traditionally led the procession and was later sacrificed to ensure fertility for the coming year. Even today in India the cow is a sacred animal and large numbers of white bulls roam the street freely. The bull can be harnessed to work, or may be pushed to the point where he is a dangerous and deadly animal.  He represents the positive and negative power of nature.

Taurus is the symbol of growth and richness. Seasonally (Northern Hemisphere), it is the time when spring is at its fullest - flowers are blooming, the newly born young of the animals are flourishing, and everything is becoming fertile and rich. Taurus has taken the potential life force of Aries and given it form in the physical manifestations of nature. Taurus represents the need to provide the means of survival. The function of Taurus in the chart, is to build and work to ensure security, to gather resources and to create beauty.

Mythology: According to Greek myth, the Taurus Bull was Jupiter in one of his disguises. Captivated by the lovely Europa, a mortal woman who had rebuffed him in his human form many times Jupiter changed himself into a pure white bull Europa, charmed by the bull's lameness, climbed trustingly on his back. Jupiter then ran off with her to Crete, turned back into his human form and Europa remained one of his mistresses for the rest of her life. The Cretan Bull or Bull of Mynos is also part of this myth as is the Minotaur.

Glyph: The glyph for Taurus  represents the head and horns of a bull. Symbolically, the empty circle represents unlimited potential and the crescent represents receptivity and the importance of instinct. The house where Taurus is situated in your chart shows where you build for material and financial security, where you make use of your resources, and where you are the most practical, hardworking and reliable.  It shows where you need to establish and develop something of value and where you need to be determined. Taurus has an affinity with the 2nd house as both are concerned with needs and values, and the practicalities of life.  Taurus has a relationship with the semi-sextile aspect.

Ruling planet:  Venus. Colour:  Green.   Gemstone: Emerald.

Body Rulership:Taurus rules the neck, throat, vocal cords, lower jaw.

Keyword: Practicality      Key Phrase: "I Have"

Some other words to describe Taurus: Positive:  Persistent, practical, romantic, loyal, affectionate, pleasant, patient, artistic, musical, placid, sensual, feeling (not emotional - feels deeply but may not show it). Negative: Lazy, possessive (not jealous-you belong to them), greedy, stubborn, selfish, extravagant, resistant, slow, materialistic, scared of pain, self indulgent, obstinate.

Taurus never believes in rushing things and is slow to form opinions. She doesn't like to be hurried and will rebel with great intensity against any prodding which conflicts with her will. (If you want a Taurus to do what you want, use persuasion not force, and always give them plenty of time to adjust.) She is very protective and possessive of both things and people and finds it very hard to let go. She is loyal and devoted and believe in the vow "to have and to hold." Taurus is extremely sensual and enjoy all the bodily pleasures of life - food, sex, perfumes, touch etc. She may suffer from insecurity and need constant demonstrations of love and affection from her partner. She has a tendency to be very materialistic and earthbound and may have difficulty in knowing the difference between need and greed.

Taureans fall into two types - the earthy type and the Venusian type. The earthy type is usually big with an impression of heaviness or stockiness. Her neck is usually thick, the mouth is sensual, the eyes are large, dark and liquid (cow eyes) and may have a rather vacant expression. She tends to walk with head and shoulders forward - the men are into body building, the women tend to plumpness. The Venusian type is usually very graceful, with a rounded body (not plump), can be very magnetic and sensual, often very beautiful and gentle. Both types are prone to sore throats and may have beautiful speaking or singing voices.

Allegory:  "To you Taurus, I give the power to build the seed into substance. Your job is a great one, requiring patience, for you must finish all that has been started or the seeds will be wasted to the wind. You are not to question nor change your mind in the middle nor depend on others for what I ask you to do. For this I give you the gift of Strength. Use it wisely." And Taurus stepped back into place.
