Element:
Fire Sign (Intuition) 3rd Decan of the Fire Trilogy
Quality:
Mutable (Changeable, Flexible, Chameleon)
Polarity:
Positive, Masculine, Yang (assertive, outgoing)
Symbology:
The Archer-Centaur, half man and half horse. Because of this, it is
a dual sign similar to Gemini and Pisces, and is also similar to
Virgo and Aquarius as it has some human symbolism. The horse is
traditionally the symbol of intuition, so the Centaur represents
intuition being directed by man, giving him the power to develop true
goals or aims. The centaur also symbolises the basic struggle between
the higher and lower natures of humankind. Seasonally it is a time of
long nights and short days, marking the beginning of winter's sleep.
It is a time of sitting around the fire dreaming and philosophising
about life, but it is also a social period in which families gather
together in order to enjoy the bounty, which has been collected
during the growing seasons. The function of Sagittarius in the chart
is to explore, to learn whatever there is to know to aid his
understanding of the world so that he can live in it more effectively.
Mythology:
The centaur of Sagittarius is Chiron, the wisest of all the Centaurs
who lived near Mt Olympus. Chiron was entrusted with the education of
the young gods and mortal heroes including Jupiter himself, who, as a
reward, granted Chiron immortality. However he was accidentally
wounded by one of Hercules' poisoned arrows, which caused him
unbearable pain. To relieve himself of it, Chiron renounced his
immortality and died. Jupiter rewarded him for his past services by
placing him in the sky as Sagittarius.
Glyph:
The Sagittarian Glyph represents an arrow and part of the bow aimed
upwards towards the stars. The arrow symbolises Aspiration whose
target is God. The house ruled by Sagittarius in the chart is where
you can be self confident, enthusiastic and expansive. It shows where
you are philosophically minded where your aims are supported by
effort and where you make contact with prevailing social and cultural patterns.

Sagittarius
needs freedom and independence. He is a restless personality who's
often irresponsible, boastful and tactless, with a tendency to put
his foot in his mouth with great regularity. However, his sense of
humour, easygoing nature and love of fun endears him to people. He is
outgoing and optimistic, with a strong thirst for knowledge, but can
at times become dogmatic and moralistic. He loves change, mental and
physical stimulation and travel. He enjoys debating, especially about
philosophical, religious or ethical issues and his broad range and
depth of knowledge about a variety of subjects will often earn him
the nickname "know-all". He tends to be a procrastinator,
promise more than he can deliver and he believes that the grass is
always greener on the other side of the fence. He is a natural clown,
but his happy face often hides an inner sadness.
Sagittarius
is usually larger than average, both in height and weight. There is
a tendency towards either very good legs or big buttocks and thighs
and he often has a gap in his front teeth. His ears may stick out and
there is a certain sense of eagerness in his eyes. His manner is
cheerful, happy-go-lucky and optimisticand has a relationship with
the 9th house as both have to do with philosophy and the reaching out
of the individual to encounter the larger world. Sagittarius is ruled
by Jupiter and has an affinity with the trine aspect.
Allegory:
"Sagittarius, I ask, that you make men laugh, for amidst their
misunderstanding of My Idea, they may become bitter. Through
laughter, you are to give man hope and through hope, turn his eyes
back to Me. You will touch many lives if but only for a moment, and
you will know the restlessness in every life you touch. To you
Sagittarius, I give the gift of Infinite Abundance, so that you may
spread wide enough to reach into every comer of darkness and bring it
light." And Sagittarius stepped back into place.
