Eros and Psyche:The Lovers

The Lovers

Eros and Psyche

Eros - God of Erotic Love

In Mythic Astrology Eros symbolises the principle of passion and desire, whilst personifying masculine sexual energy. He is said to function as the higher octave of Mars in being able to refine and transform inherent sexual urges into erotic love. The passion of Eros is felt through whatever happens to arouse or excite, he shows passionate desire and powerful emotions.

The Asteroid Myth:

The Asteroid Eros was discovered in 1898 and named after the Greek God of Love. In Mythology it is said that Eros was the son of Ares (Mars) and Aphrodite (Venus). The principle of Eros is vitality and passion (George and Block, 1987). Astrologer, Zip Dobbyns associated Eros with "romantic love" whilst J. Lee Lehman suggests Eros as the ruler of "romance and passionate attachment" and relates him to "the conceptualisation of attraction". In classical Greek Mythology Eros was said to be the patron of homosexual love.

Eros Transits:

When Eros transits a chart it may be seen as an indicator of passion and sexual attraction. The individual experiences a need to constantly recreate the initial excitement, romance and desire of falling in love. When looking at Synastry, Eros indicates sexual compatibility as planetary contact suggests that these people are "turned on" by each other. Challenging aspects could indicate problems with sexual drive, desire and activity. It can also indicate frustrated passion or obsessive tendencies within a relationship.

Psyche - The Soul Journey:

The Asteroid Psyche relates to the principle of being able to bond with and become attuned to another person. Psyche, born as a beautiful mortal, mastered many tasks set her by an enraged Aphrodite. As she overcame each hurdle, Psyche became more attuned to her psychic abilities. Her successful transformation from mortality to divinity symbolises the soul's journey from earthly nature to divine being, thus allowing her to become the heavenly bride of Eros, God of Erotic Love. Their love is said to symbolise the joining together of soul mates and their marriage produced three children named Bliss, Pleasure and Ecstasy.

Astrologically, Psyche is said to be the higher octave of Venus, expressing the refinement of personal love and psychic attunement between individuals. In Synastry, Psyche contacts suggest instinctive understanding and knowledge between individuals. Stressful aspects could indicate a total lack of understanding. Psyche-Eros contacts are indicative of a potential union of soul mates.
