Getting Apache and Perl to Work in
Windows XP
If you want to run your own web server and you
have big plans for getting hits, don't rely on Internet Information
Services (IIS) in Windows XP Professional. It's nobbled to a limit of
10 simultaneous connections, and broadband users can open far more
than 10 connections to your page just by loading it once. Your
visitors will constantly get "server is too busy" errors. Of course,
Microsoft's solution is to get you to fork out untold thousands
of pesos for Windows Server 2003, but the really smart people install
a real web server, like Apache.
Those of you who are adventurous and want to do
some server side scripting might find this article on getting Apache
to execute Perl scripts in Windows XP helpful in getting your server
side scripts to return data to a client web browser using the Include
Virtual CGI directive.
