Mor(r)ison Family

Information below supplied by Elizabeth Crow of Mitchell, Qld.
Some records have the surname Morison spelt Morrison and Moresone. According to tradition, the Clan Morrison is said to be of Norse origin, descended from a family which was shipwrecked on the shores of the island of Lewis and saved by clinging to driftwood. Certainly, the Morrison's were one of the ancient Clans of Lewis, and for a long period the Morrison's of Habost held the office of 'brieve' or judge and were known as Clann-na-breitheamh. Hugh Morrison was brieve during the latter half of the 16th century and was accused by the government of harbouring rebels, and his son John Morrison incurred the displeasure of the Macleod's for betraying Torquil Dubh McLeod, who was beheaded by the Mackenzie's in 1597.
