National Weather Service - The National Weather Service is a comprehensive agency involved in the monitoring of and prediction of weather trends the world over. Based in the United States, the National Weather Service nonetheless provides support and tactical assistance regarding weather and weather related issues and matters to people, organizations and governments the world over.
In this article we present to the reader a few interesting tidbits of information provided by the National Weather Service. Of course, the National Weather Service maintains a wealth of statistics and information -- certainly enough to fill a multi-volume group of books. Thus, we do provide only a few bit of info in this brief piece on the National Weather Service.
Many people around the world, that live in climates with cooler or variable temperatures, often hear the term “wind chill.” The National Weather Service explains how wind chill is calculated.
Wind Chill is calculated by the National Weather Service using a formula that includes wind speed and temperature. The equations are:
T(wc) = 0.0817(3.71V**0.5 + 5.81 -0.25V)(T-91.4) + 91.4
T(wc) is the wind chill, V is the wind speed in statute miles per hour and T is the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit. The formula for wind chill, using the Celsius scale is:
T(wc) = 0.045(5.27V**0.5 + 10.45 - 0.28V)(T - 33) + 33
From time to time people hear or use the term “white out.” The National Weather Service provides definitional information on weather related terms like “white out.” The National Weather Service advises as follows regarding the term “white out”:
“an official definition for ’white-out’ does not exist. It is a colloquial term that can describe any condition during snowfall that severely restricts visibility. That may mean a blizzard, or snowsquall, etc. If you get some sunlight in the mix, that makes the situation even worse - it’s like driving in fog with your headlights on high-beam. The light gets backscattered right into your face and you can’t see.”
