Tractor Supply Company - In 1938, Charles E. Schmidt Sr. of Chicago, Illinois established a mail order tractor parts business. By 1939, it had grown into a successful retail store in Minot, North Dakota.
Today, Tractor Supply Company is the largest retail farm and ranch store chain in the United States, catering for full- and part-time farmers. Indeed, there are very few towns in rural communities that do not have a Tractor Supply Company presence.
Tractor Supply Company - now based in Nashville, TN, operates nearly 500 retail stores in thirty-one states, employs more than 6,200, and revenues surpass a billion dollars a year.
Tractor Supply Company stores are concentrated east of the Rocky Mountains and many are located in the outlying suburbs of major cities. The typical Tractor Supply Company store has 15,000 square feet of inside selling space with a similar amount of outside space used to display agricultural fencing, livestock equipment and horse stalls.
Stores supply unique products to support their customers’ rural lifestyle, from welders and generators to animal care products, and men and women’s workwear. You can also find pet supplies, animal feed, power tools, riding mowers, lawn and garden products and more.
Tractor Supply Company is committed to understanding and fulfilling the needs of those who enjoy the rural lifestyle - folks who frequently describe themselves as hobby farmers and hobby ranchers. It is estimated that the "hobby" or "pleasure" farmer consumer segment spends more than $5.5 billion annually on farm supplies. Today less than ten percent of the company’s customers classify themselves as full-time farmers or ranchers. In fact, Tractor Supply’s largest customer segment does not farm at all. They are more aptly described as rural or suburban homeowners, or "self-reliants."
