In 1981 the RAN Armament Depot, Byford was transferred to a "greenfields" site at the northern end of Garden Island, in connection with the establishment of HMAS Stirling ("Fleet Base West"). The facilities included an explosives wharf and a demolition range.
The depot was established as an asset of the Naval Support Command, but with day to day administration delegated to the Naval Officer Commanding West Australia Area. Although a semi-autonomous non-commissioned naval establishment, with a civilian Officer-in-Charge, it operated as an integral part of the West Australia Naval Support Facility.
