RAN Armament & Weapon Equipment Depot, Garden Island, Western Australia

Introduction

In 1981 the RAN Armament Depot Byford was transferred to a "greenfields" site at the northern end of Garden Island (in the Perth region), in connection with the establishment of HMAS Stirling ("Fleet Base West"). The facilities included an explosives wharf and a demolition range. The new depot was initially known as the RAN Armament & Weapon Equipment Depot, Garden Island, Western Australia.

The depot was established as an asset of the Naval Support Command, but with day to day administration delegated to the Naval Officer Commanding West Australia Area. Although a semi-autonomous non-commissioned naval establishment, with a civilian Officer-in-Charge, it operated as an integral part of the West Australia Naval Support Facility.
