Military Barracks Sydney Powder Magazine

In 1873 the Sydney Mail published a "Map of Sydney showing in contrast the town of 1802 with the city of 1873". The 1802 detail in this map is believed to be derived from an engraving published in Francois Peron's 1775-1810 Voyage de decouvertes aux terres australes. This map clearly shows a powder magazine, situated within the north-eastern corner of the military barracks. It is situated centrally within a large open area surrounded by buildings and opening onto what is now George Street.

The magazine is also shown on the following maps:

It's unclear whether this is the same magazine referred to by David Collins as being under construction in February 1800. It seems unlikely, given that Collins refers to the new magazine as replacing a magazine "at too great a distance from the principal battery", which at that period would have been Dawe's Battery. It could be expected that there would be a magazine at the barracks, for storage of powder for small arms.
