 Interview from old
issue of LIVELY ARTS zine | |
We became acquainted with Beki Bondage when
she fronted the Bristol punk group Vice Squad back in the
early nineteen-eighties. Vice Squad enjoyed moderate success
among the civic-minded hardcore thrashers in Britain with
their 1981 Resurrection EP and 1982's State of the Nation
EP to name a few. It wasn't until 1985 that Beki tasted solo
prosperity with the memorable "Don't turn Away" single which
was followed by the not-so-memorable "Out of the Darkness"
single.
After several false starts Beki
has gathered together a touring group which burns up the clubs
in England with a deep fix of disco heavy metal. Returning from
a hectic schedule, Beki finally got to her mail to answer our
interview.
WHO
ARE THE MEMBERS OF THE BOMBSHELLS?
My Bombshells are Commander Bonzo on drums, Paul Rooney on guitar,
Marc Russel on bass, and we are currently auditioning keyboard
players for our next British tour. We'll be recording a new
single very soon.
HOW HAS LIFE BEEN SINCE LEAVING
VICE SQUAD?
I left Vice Squad due to political, personal and musical differences.
I formed a band called Ligotage after that, but we split up
after 18 months. I did very little except write songs and get
depressed for a year after that, until I met my present manager
and started recording again. The Bombshells were formed in February
of 1986, so I've been rehearsing, writing and doing photo sessions
DO YOU FANCY AMERICAN MEN?
I think American men are nice. The ones I met while touring
with Vice Squad were good looking as well as being very polite
(makes a change from the English ones). Anyway, David Lee Roth
is an American, and I find him appealing.
WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE FEMALE
PERFORMERS?
I like Girlschool, but I haven't heard anything by Fuzzbox or
the Pandoras. My favorite singer is Pat Benatar. I also admire
the Wilson sisters of Heart.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE BEVERAGE?
My favorite beverage is Stella Airtois Lager.
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO CALIFORNIA?
Yes, I have been to California, I stayed in the Tropicana Hotel.
It was great and we had lovely weather, which was a change from
England.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PARTY
ITEM
MY favorite party item is a ten-foot black bullwhip (only joking)
WHAT DO YOU THINK OF LIVELY
ARTS
I thought Lively Arts was well put together (like Rudolph Mureyev's
thighs), and I enjoyed the piece on London.
