Notes:

a)    The above data relates only to services that Medicare benefits are paid.  It therefore excludes services rendered free of charge to public patients in public hospitals and Veterans' Affairs patients.  The data only relates to surgical treatment of AN, it does not include non-surgical treatment such as radiosurgery.

b)    The above data includes Medicare benefit schedule (Nov 1995) item numbers 41575-6 and 41578-9.   These are "acoustic neuroma services" from Medicare's statistics. The source of the data is - Commonwealth Department of Health and Family Services.

c)    Medicare does not release data where there are six or less "services". This means that whilst the graph shows nil for the ACT, Northern Territory and Tasmania, there may be a small number of people in those states that were treated for AN. It is also possible that people from those states were treated in another state. If so their data will be included in the state where the service was provided.

d)    The figures for 1995-96 were annualised projections from six months, June 1995 to December 1995. Source of population data - Australian Bureau of Statistics (census 1991).

e)    The 'y' axis (vertical) in each graph shows the number of acoustic neuroma "services".
