ANIMATED ACOUSTIC NEUROMA

This page is intended to be a graphical representation approximating the growth of an Acoustic Neuroma. It should be noted that AN's vary in size, shape, location and growth rate. The yellow "AN" depicted in the above graphic is an approximation only!

An Acoustic Neuroma is benign tissue growth that originates in the schwann cells that line the 8th cranial nerve (the nerve of hearing and balance). It usually arises within the internal auditory canal, a small opening leading from the internal ear structures into the brain. The 7th cranial nerve (the facial nerve) also passes through this canal. As the facial nerve is adjacent to the auditory nerve, it may also be effected by an acoustic neuroma.
