Things you need to know about heartgards for dogs

Heartgard For Dogs - Every year Americans spend millions of dollars on pets. We do love our animals in this country. Unfortunately there are also pet owners that are not responsible in the care of their animals. They do not monitor where they are and they do not take them for regular examinations with a veterinarian. Some pet owners think that this is no one else’s business; however unhealthy animals in a neighborhood can place other animals at risk.

There are simple things that every pet owner should do to insure the good health of their pet. Make sure that the pet has their yearly shots and examinations. Unless you are a breeder that knows about blood lines and pedigrees, have your pet neutered or spayed. For dogs it is imperative that they are protected from heartworm. The only way to do this is to give them medication during the season when mosquitoes are around. Heartgard for dogs is a simple to use product that will eliminate the worry of heartworm. Heartgard for dogs is available in several different prescriptions. It comes in a daily pill that is given to the dog at meal time. Heartgard for dogs is also available in once a month applications. This is the form that we use for our dogs.

We live in Minnesota so it is not necessary to treat for heartworm during the winter months due to the fact that there are no mosquitoes during the winter. Mosquitoes transmit the heartworm disease to dogs. The disease consists of worm like parasites invading the muscle of the heart and feeding on it. This causes the dog to experience heart failure and die. Heartgard for dogs protects the heart from the parasite. The medication is not effective if there are already parasite eggs in the dog’s body. If you do not start the heartgard for dogs at the beginning of the mosquito season the veterinarian will need to run a blood test to make sure the disease is not already present.

This test can be expensive and is so easy to prevent simply by starting the medication early in the spring. Even small house dogs spend some time outdoors and should be treated. The once a month chewable tablet has a flavoring on it so the dogs eat it like a treat. The amount of the medication given is based on the weight of the dog. The heartgard for dogs come with small heart stickers to place on your calendar as a reminder that the next dose is due. We start our dogs on the first of April and give them a dose on the first of each month through November.
