Want to know about poultry farms?

Poultry Farm - I’m not sure how old I was because the memory is very vague, but my very first school trip was to go see a poultry farm. It doesn’t sound very exciting, and perhaps that is why I don’t remember much about it. I do know I learned that day, and I would guess that would be the point of going. We saw how the eggs were harvested and put into containers for shipping and sale, and we also saw where other chickens were raised for a whole different reason. Though the place was near where I grew up, I couldn’t tell you where it is. Perhaps they have gone out of business. I don’t really know.

This poultry farm was, from my vague memory, at least animal friendly. I eat chicken, but it bothered me to see the ones running around. I knew they were going to be in the grocery store some day. It’s harder to buy chicken when you know where they came from. That might be why there are so many vegetarians out there today. My daughter is only four, but she won’t eat many types of meat. I have a feeling if I took her to a poultry farm she may become a vegetarian for life. It’s funny that she is so sensitive about other animals yet can’t find it within herself to be nice to our cats. It’s a mystery.

Many people don’t like to buy chicken unless they know that they birds were raised on a free-range poultry farm. I’m not an expert on this, but I believe that means they are allowed to run free, and are not raised in tiny cages. I’m not sure what a difference this might make in the quality of the chicken, but I do think it is more humane. Though I believe we were meant to eat animals, I do think we can try to be humane about it. It might be more expensive to have a poultry farm like this, but I think people are willing to spend a little more just for that reason. I know I am.

If there is a poultry farm near you, you may not even know it. If you can take your children there to learn about animals, you should by all means do so. Though they may change their mind about eating chickens or any other animals, at least they are doing it based on an informed decision. If the chance arises for my daughter to visit a poultry farm, I will surely take her. Just like with visiting the zoo and the animal shelter, I think knowledge is a good thing. Her generation may change things for the better.
