National Identity  
 
 


  Federation marked the political and cultural transition from a collection of colonies to a federated nation. This process was symbolised by the acceptance and promotion of things distinctively Australian such as the wattle, the Kangaroo, billytea, the bush and the boomerang. These have been enduring icons of Australian cultural expression and identity. The students have researched, written and discussed the origins of these icons, which are now embedded in our psyche and culture. It is only in recent years that our understanding and inclusion of Australian aboriginal culture has moved beyond the boomerang.
