I arrived in Australia in July 1980 and I came from Vietnam. The first year I
came here I found that Australia is a multicultural country. I saw all kinds of
people on the street such as Asians, South Africans, Germans, many kinds of
people and accents. According to my teacher Australia really became a
multicultural country in the 1970's.
In 1982 I started to work and I received a lot of help from workmates. As far
as I remember, on the first day at work I brought my own food for my lunch. At
that time everyone focused on me, and asked me what I was eating, (it was fried
rice) and they wanted to try it. They did try it and said it was delicious food.
After that my workmates asked for the recipe. So I thought multiculturalism is
the best because it made it easy for me to make friends and for us to understand
each other.
If Australia was not multicultural I might have felt lonely at work, and I
might have felt inferior because of the colour of my skin and hair. I think it
is very important for everyone to become closer and to improve the economy for
the country because the more people who come to Australia the better it is for
us in new discoveries and inventions.
