On Tuesday the 6th of March 2001 three classes from the
Flemington Reading and Writing program came together and went to the new
Melbourne Museum. There were thirty-three students and two teachers. At
ten o’clock I met Jan our teacher at the museum front door. We waited
for fifteen minutes for the other people to come.
After everyone had arrived a man from the museum called David took us
on a tour around the museum, and showed us the old building opposite
called the Exhibition Buildings that were built in the 1880’s. This was
where Australia held its first federal parliament before Canberra our
national capital was built. We have been learning about the Federation of
Australia from our teachers Kay and Jan, so it was good to see this
building that we have been reading about. It was very interesting and a
different style to the new museum, which is very modern in style.
When we walked inside the museum we saw many different things – very
interesting, that I had never seen before. I saw lots of artwork by
Australian aboriginal people. Some of them lived by the beach and caught
their own fish; they had a lovely easy life before white man came.
I also saw some stuffed animals, rocks, Phar Lap the hero horse and
many many things. When we walked to the other side of the very big
building, we saw a big old computer made in 1942-I think. This old machine
is not as strong as a cheap pocket calculator but it would fill an office.
We all had a good day looking at all the things in the museum, I liked
it very much and I want to thank Jan and Kay our good teachers for taking
us there and helping us learn more and more about our new country
Australia.
