What is an FM-900/FM-92?

An FM-92 is one of the FM-900 series of mobile radios, manufactured by Philips. Philips no longer has any interest in these radios, and last time I checked, Simoco Pacific was offering some support services. Many FM-92 transceivers are now in the hands of Autralian Radio Amateurs, due to a band change by the Victorian CFA.

Basic specifications:

  • Mode - FM only
  • Channels - 99, simplex and/or duplex
  • Power output - 1 Watt to 25 Watts
  • Power supply - 13.8VDC, (-) ground
  • Power consumption - 6.5A, Tx at 25W
  • Scanning - 2 groups of 10 channels
  • Channel frequencies, simplex/duplex, scan groups and power levels programmable by EEPROM
  • Economiser mode for low power consumption
  • Almost bulletproof

FM-92 modifications

I make no claim to have discovered all these modifications myself, and will credit the original authors where known. I accept no responsibility for damage caused to the units during, or after modification. Some modifications I have performed on my own u nit/s, but some I have not (yet) tried. Those I have performed myself, will be indicated by a .

I am aware of several variations in the FM900/FM91/FM92/FM93 series of VHF/UHF transceivers. Except where indicated, all the following notes refer to the "VHF-only" FM92, with a separate control head.
