A New Way of Learning

I was dancing with my friend, Jeannie Saypar, one night and the music changed.

I don't know this dance," I said.

Do you want to sit down?" she asked in her delightful Parisian accent.

No, I said. "I'll pick it up by osmosis."

I do not understand zis word," said Jenny, so I explained that osmosis was the man in the Old Testament who led the Israelites out of Egypt.

The fact is, most of what we know, or think we know, is picked up by a kind of osmosis. We absorb it from our environment.

Recognising this, the Nepean Institute's Dr Sigmund Flapjack has developed a new education system. He calls it osmotic induction.

Our present education system encourages young people to stay longer at school or university but their additional knowledge fails to equip them for the workforce. Dr Flapjack wants to divert the money wasted on higher education to fund social venues for students.

There they could mingle with practitioners from their chosen field and "absorb" knowledge. Who knows? We may soon see degrees like MB(O) – Bachelor of Medicine (by osmosis).

I think I'll stick with my old doctor.
