I chose "Two Dimensional Verse" as the title because, at the time the earliest of these poems were written, my life had lost a dimension.

In one sense I was pessimistic about the future because of three coinciding problems—I had been retrenched and employment prospects were bleak, I had recently been injured and was no longer able to compete in sport, and my wife, Lynne, was ill with only doubtful prospects of recovery.

Added to the worry about Lynne's well-being, her illness meant that we were no longer able to share all the activities and interests we had enjoyed in the past.

In that sense everything seemed colourless and flat. It was in such a state of mind that I wrote Fading.

Other verses reflect my normal, more cheerful view of life and my enjoyment of nature. These provide the second dimension.

The Wind, for example, was written after cycling through a willy willy (it's a small whirl wind) early one autumn morning. I was "attacked" by thousands of whirling, colourful leaves that swirled around like butterflies as the wind kept pace with me. It was a beautiful experience.

A number of the poems were written during the early 1990s but there have been so many changes since then that I should change the title to Four Dimensional Verse. I am not sure that even three dimensions would be enough to describe everything that has happened since then.
