In December 1999, the Penrith Star published a letter from a reader requesting jokes to send to her brother and his mates who were serving with the Australian peace-keeping force in East Timor.
I rang the Star (this proved to be the beginning of the "Tall Tales" and "Off the Air" columns) and invited Lorraine and her sister-in-law into the studio.
The jokes lasted for well over an hour, punctuated them with music and recorded humour as well as interviews with the two women.
Obviously our transmitter couldn't reach Timor but I gave Lorraine a tape of the program to send to her brother.
