Alaska

A holiday that was alas too short!

by Daphne Gonzalvez

Question: What was the last great real estate bargain in the world?
Answer: Alaska!
In 1867 the US bought the whole state of Alaska from Russia for 2 cents an acre.

Alaska is not only at the top, it's over the top! The statistics are numbing:

  • Alaska is twice as big as Texas
  • At Barrow the sun rises on May 10 and sets on August 2. That's an 84-day day.
  • Alaska has 100,000 glaciers covering 30,000 square miles

Australia and Alaska have a link—Captain Cook. Our plane took off over Sydney's Botany Bay, which Captain Cook discovered. In a later voyage, he explored Alaska. He visited the Cook Inlet, where Anchorage is now located. We spent several pleasant days at Anchorage, and even lived in the Captain Cook hotel.
