Electrode potentials

Electrode potential
is  the difference between the charge on an electrode and the charge in the solution.

Hydrogen electrode

This topic involves

1.reactions of metals and non metals

2.oxidation- reduction reactions

3. reactions of metal with  metal ion and comparison of different EMFs

Uses:

  1. Electrochemical cells – for the source of energy
  2. Electro refining and electro plating of metals
  3. Corrosion (rusting is an electrochemical process -similar to an electrolytic cell

(some overview of prevention of  rusting or corrosion is given in PDF file in Activity-series page-p 4)

Website http://www.hyperdictionary.com/

Gives the following definition for electrochemical series:

A serial arrangement of metallic elements or ions according to their electrode potentials determined under  specific conditions , the order shows the tendency of one metal to reduce the ions of any other metal  below it in the series.

Synonyms: electromotive force series, electromotive series
