The Village: Claira

The village of Claira is situated between Perpignan and the Mediterannean coast and first appears in the historical record in the 11th century.

The village church dates from the 14th Century and its square Catalan style tower houses the oldest operating church bells in France.

Claira has a population of around 2500 people and many of its houses have been recently renovated.
The village has a range of local services, with two boulangeries, including  one  right next door to the house.
There is also a mini-supermarket, a tabac, a pharmacy, and a café & bar, as well as basic services such as the post office.

Surrounding villages such as St Laurent de la Salanque, St Hippolyte, and Bompas have a range of markets and restaurants.

The modern Carrefour shopping centre with major supermarket, speciality shops, and restaurants is just a few minutes away by car.
A recently completed cycle path skirts the village and extends from Rivesaltes to the beach at le Barcares. Bikes can be hired at le Barcares and St Laurent de la Salanque.
