Edward John Steadman and wife Sarah Anne (nee Johnson) with their 3 children emigrated from Soham, Cambridgeshire, England to the Colony of New South Wales, arriving in Sydney on 23rd May 1855.

They stayed in Sydney and Camden working on farms until they moved to and settled in Singleton about 1860.

Edward and Sarah raised their family in Singleton and both were buried in Whittingham Cemetery on the Maitland Road, as are some of their descendants.

Genealogy research is currently a favourite topic and a rewarding pastime in which more and more people are indulging and desire to do. It is quite prevalent in our modern society in numerous countries around the world. There has been some Steadman family members that have indicated that the information they have gathered about their particular branch of the family has been duplicated by others in their efforts to trace their origins and their family roots. The conversations that I have had with the members of the family that are indulging in research indicates a degree of frustration at "not being able to get anywhere" which leads them to to 'postpone' the research that they were doing, and temporarily place it into the 'too hard' basket and the 'do it later' basket. After collaboration with some of the Steadman family members that are desirous of 'finalising the matter'; it is intended to create 'a starting point' for others to contribute information that would enable completion of the events and happenings of descendants of Edward and Sarah into a reference book that will be available for all that are desirous of having such a book.
