Sosonko's Corner
He who has not tasted the steel of a sacrifice on f7 or f2, has not
tasted chess. Genna Sosonko presents in his Corner new upsets, but shows that
there are other weaknesses too, and not only in a game of Chess960! Featuring
fresh and old stories, from youngsters Carlsen and Radjabov, to mysterious names
like Khalilbeili and Rubel…
Book Reviews
Several publishers are completing coverage of all French variations as we speak.
Glenn Flear compares them in his Reviews. But first he takes a good look at
Konstantin Sakaev’s new book on the 7.Bc4 Grünfeld and Konikowski/Soszynski’s
monograph on the KI Four Pawns Attack.
Flear’s amazement about Chess Stars’s decision to come up with a revamped version of Sakaev’s first Grünfeld tome of just 2 years ago, is replaced by admiration for the Russian GM’s deep analysis in this new 426-page work: ‘It shows how much there is to chess theory these days if you want to get down to the nitty-gritty.’
The Four Pawns Attack is an occasional choice of Flear himself against the King’s Indian. Konikowski/Soszynski’s new book covers mainly 6…c5 lines. The authors’ analysis level doesn’t match that of a Sakaev, but as an insightful reference book this one will please not only club players.
The comparison of Sam Collins’s ‘the French advance’ with Steffen Pedersen’s ‘French: Advance and Other Lines’ reveals some interesting insights. Pedersen’s ‘Tarrasch Variation’ also gets a look-over and is laid side-by-side with Psakhis’s legendary ‘French Defence 3.Nd2’. Just read this review and you will have a good hunch which ‘French Collection’ should be yours to get.

Garry Kasparov has dominated the world of competitive chess for longer than
any world champion. The period 1993–1998 represents one of the richest phases in
his career. With the announcement of his retirement, it is only appropriate that
the games should now be appreciated in the greatest depth possible. Earlier
games are analyzed with computer assistance for the first time – sometimes
revealing blemishes in existing analysis – showing the richness of thought and
the supreme versatility of the player many consider to be the greatest of all
time.
Particular emphasis is placed on evaluations of the openings chosen and
statistics on the champion's record against his most fiercely competitive
rivals.
The author, International Master Tibor Károlyi, who played against Kasparov as a
World Junior, gives an appreciation of an undoubted genius – this is an
unashamed celebration of dynamism, diligence, desire and fighting chess.

One of the strongest GMs in today's world and No 1 in his country,
Viswanathan Anand comes from India, the ancient homeland of chess.
Since he was 13-14 years old he started to play successfully in tournaments. As he was 16 he headed India's team at the World Olympiad of 1986 where he scored 7,5 points out of 11. In two years he earned his GM norm. In his younger years Anand attracted chess world's attention with his excellent combinational solutions, his almost phenomenal quickness of mind and spontaneity. His today's style is combining brightly both combinational and positional as well as delicate endgame play. Other opinions also mark Anand's remarkable combinational vision, being very creative in finding tactical methods, risking willingly in difficult situations on the board, his fighting hard and resourcefully. For several years he has been 3d (after Kasparov and Kramnik) according to the FIDE World rating list. Charlie Chaplin said once: "If they want to know me better, let them see my films". Likewise, to know more of Anand, you might read this book containing as many as 700 selected commented games and a rich photo gallery. The book is likely to help chess players in improving their game. Russian and English languages. Hard cover. 735 pages. Moscow'2004. |
