PROUD TO BE NADURI

INNU TAL-BANDA MNARJA

Versi ta' Joe Borg Attard.Muzika tas-Surmast V. Ciappara

Reading 1
Acts 12:1-11

In those days, King Herod laid hands upon some members of the Church to harm them.
He had James, the brother of John, killed by the sword,
and when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews
he proceeded to arrest Peter also.
–It was the feast of Unleavened Bread.–
He had him taken into custody and put in prison
under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each.
He intended to bring him before the people after Passover.
Peter thus was being kept in prison,
but prayer by the Church was fervently being made
to God on his behalf.

On the very night before Herod was to bring him to trial,
Peter, secured by double chains,
was sleeping between two soldiers,
while outside the door guards kept watch on the prison.
Suddenly the angel of the Lord stood by him
and a light shone in the cell.
He tapped Peter on the side and awakened him, saying,
“Get up quickly.”
The chains fell from his wrists.
The angel said to him, “Put on your belt and your sandals.”
He did so.
Then he said to him, “Put on your cloak and follow me.”
So he followed him out,
not realizing that what was happening through the angel was real;
he thought he was seeing a vision.
They passed the first guard, then the second,
and came to the iron gate leading out to the city,
which opened for them by itself.
They emerged and made their way down an alley,
and suddenly the angel left him.
Then Peter recovered his senses and said,
“Now I know for certain
that the Lord sent his angel
and rescued me from the hand of Herod
and from all that the Jewish people had been expecting.”

Reading II
2 Tm 4:6-8, 17-18

I, Paul, am already being poured out like a libation,
and the time of my departure is at hand.
I have competed well; I have finished the race;
I have kept the faith.
From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me,
which the Lord, the just judge,
will award to me on that day, and not only to me,
but to all who have longed for his appearance.

The Lord stood by me and gave me strength,
so that through me the proclamation might be completed
and all the Gentiles might hear it.
And I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.
The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat
and will bring me safe to his heavenly Kingdom.
To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Gospel
Mt 16:13-19

When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi
he asked his disciples,
“Who do people say that the Son of Man is?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah,
still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Simon Peter said in reply,
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah.
For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
And so I say to you, you are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven

NADUR - GOZO 23 JUNE 2007

The Nadur Local Council has just published a new book – Nadur, the village of the rising sun. Nadur, the village from where one can enjoy a magnificent sunrise, is the most populated parish of Gozo. It was one of the first hamlets of the island to be raised to the status of a village. This took place in 1688, when it became an autonomous parish. The places of interest range from prehistoric remains to a troglodyte abode; from a coastal tower to two windmills; from old niches to a maritime museum; from valleys brimming with citrus fruit trees to beautifully laid gardens. The jewel in the crown is the parish church dedicated to Saint Peter and Paul with its countless treasures.
The book has four parts: a short history of Nadur; a guide to the main attractions in the village; the story of the parish with a detailed guide to the baroque church and its paintings; and a section with information on the folkloristic attractions held throughout the year as well as all societies and clubs.
The book is number 26 in the Gaulitana series on the history and heritage of Gozo and is co-authored by Gozo historian Joseph Bezzina and Joe Muscat. It is the hope of the Nadur Local Council that this book will enhance the love of the Nadurin for their village and will attract more foreign visitors to take pleasure in the beauties of our village.
The book with many colour illustrations will sell for Lm2.50; however it is being offered at a pre-publication price of Lm2.00, a savings of 20%, if acquired from the Nadur Local Council, before 29 June, the parish feast.

FATHER MICHAEL ATTARD

The saintly priest from Nadur

INTRODUCTION

On Nadurjana on Sunday we are honored to present to you pieces of the holy life of Father Michael Attard, we know him very well as Dun Mikiel ta' Natu. Dun Mikiel touched the lives of many people not only in Nadur his home town but in other places in Gozo, Malta and many other places where he visited. His life was a mission from above, he visited many countries where there is missionary priest from Gozo in particular, He also visited communist Russia when was under the Soviet Union. Dun Mikiel had his way to talk to the people and to encourage them to live a Christian life. He was very good at talking to the youths of Nadur to attend the monthly meeting at the Society of Doctrine MUSEUM.

On the 13 th. June, 2006 the bishop Emeritus of Gozo, His Excellency Mgr. Nikol Cauchi published a small book on the life of Dun Mikiel. We are presenting to you pieces of his life from this publication. Dun Mikiel was born in Nadur on the 1 st. of October, 1933, he was baptized the next day. His parents were Coronatu Attard, son of Mikiel Attard and Anna Tabone, daughter of Peter Tabone. Their son Mikiel was the eldest amongst the family of twelve brothers and sisters. His godfather was Peter Tabone, son of Gianpatist, grandfather of the baby from his mothers side and Carmela Attard, daughter of Mikiel Attard, aunt of the baby. They gave him the names of Mikieli, Guzepp and Koronatu.

Dun Mikiel Attard attended the Nadur primary school and after school he attended the religion classes of the Society of Doctrine MUSEUM. At 8 years old he received the Sacrament of Confirmation from the bishop of Gozo Mgr. Michael Gonzi. on the 29 May 1941. Dun Mikiel was an altar boy in the parish of Nadur. At 10 years he started his higher education at the Sacred Heart seminary in Gozo.

He was anointed priest on the 12 th. April 1959. His first solemn mass was celebrated on the 26 April 1959 in the Collegiate church of Nadur. The orchestra and choir were under the direction of Maestro Nazzareno Refalo. The homily was delivered by Nikol Cauchi the author of the book. It was a very windy day with the occasional showers but that didn't dampen the celebrations and the joy of Dun Mikiel and his family and the Nadurin.

Dun Mikiel was the spiritual director for Nadur Youngsters Football Club from 1964 till 1996 when he had to retire because of ill health. On his initiative in 1966 the Society of Doctrine MUSEUM of Nadur started the monthly publication of "Il-Hbieb Isejhu" to remind and invite the Nadur youths to attend the monthly meetings. The publication was always very informative and educational. This publication is still being printed today but in a new format. Copies of it were received overseas in Australia, Canada and the USA.

In 1959 Dun Mikiel was chosen as the Head Master for the Italian language and religion at the seminary, he did this work till 1968. He was chosen as the spiritual director of the seminary minor of Gozo from 1971 till 1983 and that of the seminary major from 1970 till 1996 when he was ill.

Dun Mikiel always had the Nadur migrants at heart. In 1970 he started his voyage to Australia with the Italian ship "Achille Lauro", this ship took thousands of Maltese to Australia. On his trip Dun Mikiel got very sick and he had to spend some weeks in hospital to recover. In Australia he spent almost a year meeting Gozitans living in that continent. While in Melbourne he served at Corpus Christi parish in Glenroy. During his stay in Melbourne he visited the beautiful La Trobe Valley in Gippsland, where relatives of Dun Mikiel lives in Moe a coal and energy town east of Melbourne.

In 1985 he was in Rome for the ordination of his brother, Dun Gusepp as parish priest of St. Ignatius. Dun Mikiel visited many countries to help the Maltese missionaries. In 1984 he visited Egypt, Ethiopia and Kenya. In Ethiopia Dun Mikiel and his friends were arrested and placed in prison for one night. The Maltese nuns who have a convent in that country assisted for their release. Sister Ambrosia from Nadur spoke to the prison authorities for their release. The british ambassador in that country was also involved for their release from prison.

Dun Mikiel with his brother Dun Gusepp

Dun Mikiel visited the missionaries of Kenya again the year after his bad experience with the officials of that country. He was invited by the Capuchin Brothers at the diocese of Garissa. While he was in Kenya he took part in the African Eucharist Congress that was held in Nairobi in 1985. In 1986 he visited Pakistan where he stayed at the convent of the Dominican nuns and the Missionary Society of St. Paul. In 1987 he visited Brazil, he stayed in the parish of Dun Gorge Grima. While in Brazil he visited Dun John Mary Cauchi a missionary from Gharb, Gozo.

Dun Mikiel visited Tunisia on several occasions and stayed with the Brothers of the MSSP. The last trip of Dun Mikiel was in Peru in1995 where he stayed with Dun Raymond Portelli a missionary from Nadur. During his last trip to the missionaries Dun Mikiel started to feel the pain that the cruel Parkinson Disease brought on him. When he arrived at the heliport in Xewkija his brothers were amazed how much his health has changed and became weak. Dun Mikiel was very much involved in the activities of the Legion of mary in Gozo. For some time he was the spiritual director of the Curia "Immaculate Mary" Dun Mikiel suffered for some time from different types of illnesses, he suffered from azma and Parkinson's disease. In 1996 he had to retire at home. After a long 6 years of suffering from the cruel illness Dun Mikiel died at the Gozo General Hospital on Friday 30 th. July 2004. During his agony he had his brothers and sisters at his bed side. Dun Joe Cardona administered his last sacraments.

Dun Mikiel in Peru with Dun Raymond Portelli

The funeral was held on Monday 2 nd. August at 2.30 pm. in the after noon. His body was exposed for some time at his home in St. John Street. At 4.30 the cortege left his home to the Collegiate basilica church of nadur. The main celebrant was His Excellency Mgr. Nikol Cauchi Bishop of Gozo. One hundred and sixteen priests took part in the celebration. Huge crowd jammed the basilica, this was a witness of the respect that the people had for Dun Mikiel.

The guests included the President of Malta Dr. Eddie Fenech Adami, Prime Minister Dr. Lawrence Gonzi, Vice Prime Minister Dr. Tonio Borg, the Speaker of the House Anton Tabone, ministers and Secretaries of Parliament, members of parliament from both sides, Mayors and Councilors from Gozo together with many other personalities.

SOME COMMENTS MADE ON DUN MIKIEL

"Sibt f'Dun Mikiel qassis li jaf jghinek tghix il-prezent, waqt li jfakkrek li l-passat hu fil-hniena ta' Alla u l-futur mhux f'idejna. Kien jghidli biex nghix il-prezent b'imhabba kbira lejn Alla u lejn il-proxxmu, b'hekk ma jkolli ghalfejn ninkwieta b'xejn. Sibt f'Dun Mikiel qassis li kien jintelaq b'ruhu u b'gismu fil-qalb ta' Gesu u kien iheggigni biex nghaddi mill-istess triq u hekk insib il-paci."

Dun Gorg Grima, Ghawdex tilef qassis qaddis, f'Lehen is-Sewwa (Is-Sibt, 18 ta' Settembru, 2004)

"Dun Mikiel was above all an excellent spiritial director, exercising this mission at the Gozo Seminary, with members of several religious orders, and with an innumerable number of pious men and women. His direction - and I can personnaly vouch for this - had a Christ - Like character, " as I have loved you" (John 13,34). He succeeded to convey Christ's eternal love to those who sought his counsel. His spiritual direction was Christ - like in motive, that is for the sake of the Father who loves us as His children; Christ - like in intensity, prepared to suffer with you; Christ - like in universality, extending itself to friends and strangers alike; Christ - like in endurance, persevering in spite of injuries, annoyance, and the basest ingratitude. No ,matter how great one's difficulties, no matter how complicated one's problems, a chat with him allowed one to see the light at the end of the deep tunnel of life's darkness."

Dr. Rev. Joseph Bezzina, Appreciation. Fr. Michael Attard, in the Sunday Times August 1, 2004)

TALBA

O Alla ta' tjieba u ta' setgha bla tarf, inti ghogbok issejjah lil Dun Mikiel Attard ghas-sacerdozju u ridtu jkun qaddej biezel fil-ghalqa tieghek. Ahna nfahhruk u nroddulek hajr ghall-grazzji li inti xerridt fuq il-poplu tieghek permez tal-ministeru sacerdotali tieghu, kif ukoll permezz tat-talb u tas-sagrificcji li kien joffrilek.

Ahna nitolbuk, Mulej, biex, jekk inhi r-rieda tieghek, inti tigglorifika lil Dun Mikiel u, bl-intercessjoni tieghu, lilna taghtina l-grazzja li tant nixtiequ u li bil-herqa u b'fidi fik qeghdin irresqu quddiemek (semmi l-grazzja li tixtieq taqla). Amen.
